Why I Love Iceland
/October 29, 2024

Iceland is more than just a destination for me; it’s a magical realm that embodies everything I adore about the Nordic world. The further north you go, the more enchanting it becomes! My journey began in the spring of 2015, a trip that ignited my deep appreciation for this incredible land filled with breathtaking nature, captivating culture, mystical elves, mischievous trolls, legendary Vikings, and a rich tapestry of traditional sagas and contemporary pop culture.

At first, I viewed Iceland as a once-in-a-lifetime adventure—a tick on my bucket list. However, my perspective has since transformed. Now, I believe it’s a place that deserves at least two visits: once during the “time of the sun” in spring and summer, when the landscape comes alive, and again in the winter months, when the northern lights paint the sky in mesmerizing hues. It’s during this magical time that the elements reveal their power, and if you’re lucky, the sky may dance with colours, captivating your heart and soul.

A Land of Extremes and Natural Luxury

Often called the land of fire and ice, Iceland is a breathtaking paradox, with over a hundred volcanoes and vast glaciers shaping its stunning landscape. The richness of this land is mirrored in its national flag: blue for the waters and mountains, white for the snow and ice, and red for the fiery volcanoes and lava. With more than 10,000 waterfalls—about 200 of which have names—this country boasts some of the most famous and frequently visited cascades in the world. I was in awe as I learned that geysers, those spectacular fountains of water and steam, derive their name from the old Nordic word “geysa,” meaning to gush forth. Here, you can swim between tectonic plates, literally straddling the boundary between the Eurasian and North American plates, which was an unforgettable experience.

No matter the season, Iceland offers thermal springs that promise relaxation and rejuvenation. Imagine soaking in a warm, steamy pool surrounded by the crisp, cool air—pure bliss!

Elves, Sagas, and a Parallel World

Living in Iceland means being part of one of the happiest and safest countries in the world. With over 60 percent of the population residing in Reykjavik, the northernmost capital on the planet, I was struck by the vibrant, welcoming atmosphere. The energy on the island is primarily renewable, reflecting a deep respect for nature. As I wandered through the streets, I was fascinated to learn about the unique Icelandic naming system. Instead of traditional surnames, people use a patronymic or matronymic system where a child’s name is derived from the parent’s first name, followed by “son” or “daughter.”

Christmas in Iceland is especially enchanting. Children eagerly await the arrival of 13 Yule Lads, and books are the most treasured gifts during the festive season. The country boasts one of the highest rates of readers and authors per capita, and I found it inspiring that one in ten Icelanders writes a book at least once in their lifetime.

Perhaps the most whimsical aspect of Icelandic culture is the belief in “hidden people”—elves. Over half the population holds a belief in their existence, and I was charmed to learn that builders often avoid certain areas to keep these mystical beings happy. It’s not uncommon to hear a name like Álfur, which translates directly to “elf,” in everyday life.

No to McDonald’s, Yes to Hot Dogs and Beer

In a bold cultural statement, Iceland closed its last McDonald’s in October 2009. To this day, you can see the last sold cheeseburger on display at a hostel in Reykjavik. Instead of fast food, Icelanders take pride in their hot dogs (pylsur). The local favorite, Bæjarins Beztu Pylsur (The Best Hot Dog in Town), gained international fame after a visit from Bill Clinton in 2004, putting Reykjavik’s hot dog stand on the culinary map. Hot dogs are a quintessential Icelandic dish, and I couldn’t resist indulging in one myself!

Iceland also celebrates its vibrant beer culture, marking Beer Day on March 1, the day prohibition ended in 1989. With 26 breweries now thriving in the country, I was thrilled to sample some delicious local brews while soaking in the stunning views.

Notorious Tastes for the Brave

“When in Iceland, enjoy like a Viking,” they say. I tried traditional dried fish known as harðfiskur, which quickly became a favorite snack. But my culinary courage was truly tested when I sampled fermented Greenland shark (hákarl). The potent aroma of ammonia and its intense fishy flavour made it a dish for the brave-hearted! Locals suggested pairing it with brennivín, or “black death,” a traditional potato schnapps flavoured with caraway seeds, to ease the unique taste.

Journeying Along the Golden Circle and South Coast Adventure

A multi-day adventure in Reykjavik opened up the wonders of “Iceland in miniature” along the “Golden Circle” and the “South Coast Adventure.” Walking across the Reykjanes Peninsula felt surreal, as I literally stepped from Europe into North America. At Thingvellir, I stood at the rift between tectonic plates, contemplating the history of the Viking Parliament that convened there.

Visiting the geothermal area of Geysir was another highlight, where I marveled as the Strokkur geyser erupted every few minutes. Each waterfall I encountered was more breathtaking than the last, and I found myself lost in the beauty of the black sands at Reynisfjara beach, capturing the most iconic selfies of my journey.

But That’s Not All

Due to its small population, Iceland has developed a unique app designed to prevent incest by helping users determine how closely related they are to someone they’re dating. It was the first country to elect a female president and has also had a gay prime minister. While strip clubs have been banned since 2010, Reykjavik’s nightlife offers a wild and exhilarating experience on weekends, where you can immerse yourself in the vibrant atmosphere of “runtur.” Plus, for those with a curious spirit, don’t miss the chance to visit the world’s largest phallological museum, showcasing an astonishing collection of penises from various species!
